Competency 4: Foundations and Applications of Differentiated Instruction

This course focuses on applying evidence-based differentiated reading instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners. Participants will learn to differentiate instruction across oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension based on student strengths, needs, language proficiency, developmental levels, and assessment data. Emphasis is placed on scaffolding, multisensory materials, increasingly complex texts, re-teaching, progress monitoring, and intensifying interventions for English Learners and students with reading difficulties, including dyslexia. Participants will also explore higher-order thinking, background knowledge, writing, technology, and appropriate instructional accommodations to support reading development and comprehension. This course requires access to students.
