Competency 3: Foundations and Applications of Assessment

This course focuses on the application and interpretation of reading assessments to identify student strengths, needs, and progress. Participants will examine formative, summative, screening, diagnostic, progress-monitoring, and outcome assessments, including formal and informal measures. Emphasis is placed on analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, understanding standardized assessment results, identifying characteristics of reading difficulties and dyslexia, selecting appropriate accommodations for ELLs and students with disabilities, and using assessment data to differentiate instruction and intensify interventions. Participants will also learn to communicate assessment results with families and collaborate on strategies to support students’ reading development.
